How do I sell stuff?

Everything we sell is on consignment. That is, individuals bring items in during our normal business hours, and each item is marked with a lot number. A lot number is a unique number, assigned weekly, that is used to identify each individual seller. For instance, the first person to bring items in to sell for an auction is given lot number 1, the next person is lot number 2, and so on. When an item is sold, the lot number and a description of the item is recorded for each item, as well as the price and the buyer.

Commission

This is how we make our money.

Commission is charged on a per item basis.

If an item brings $25 or less, we charge 35% commission for that item.

If an item brings over $25, we charge 25% commission for that item.

Call me stupid, but I still don't get it

(Tuesday morning)
Okay, Joe Consignor is on vacation and cleaning out his garage. He discovers there's lots of things he'd like to sell, so he loads up his 1977, rusted out Chevy pickup, and drives to Gardner from Anywhere, USA. He uses the map from the Stricker's Auction web site to find Gardner, and then the auction house itself.

Once at the auction, he pulls inside the gate and shuts his pickup off right in the middle of the parking lot. Ron and Karen make a comment about how they hope his truck will restart or they might have to move it with the forklift. Joe is then greeted by Jerry, who directs Joe where to park his truck so that it can easily be unloaded (and picked up by the forklift in case it doesn't start ;-) ).

Most of what Joe has to sell is going to sell outside. He has a car jack, a set of jumper cables, and a box full of misc. car parts. Jerry writes down Joe's name and mailing address, and assigns Joe lot number 29 (because he is the 29th person to consign items for the upcoming auction). Jerry puts an orange sticker on the 3 items and marks each sticker with a 29, so that they can be easily identified at sale time.

But wait, Joe also has a box of old dishes in the front seat of his truck. He tries to open the passenger door, but then remembers that it does not open (darn Chevy!). He walks around to the driver's side and hands the box of dishes to Jerry. Jerry examines the contents and decides that the dishes will sell better inside, so he hands them to one of his trusty sidekicks, Karen, who takes the dishes inside and displays them nicely on a table inside. She then marks each of the dishes with 29 on an orange sticker, so that the dishes can be identified with the appropriate consignor during the auction.

Joe then stands around with a dumb look on his face, not knowing exactly what to do next. He asks Jerry if there is anything else that he needs to do. Jerry tells him, "Nope. We'll itemize everything as we sell it and send you a list and check on Tuesday afternoon." "Wow! That's great!", exclaims Joe as he slides into the front seat of his old truck. "Thanks, Mr. Consignor," says Jerry wincing as Joe's old Chevy grinds to a start.

(Tuesday afternoon)
After lunch at the local diner, Joe decides it's time to sell off the old Chevy and by one of them fancy new Dodge Rams. So he spends 15 minutes polishing the rust on his old truck and that afternoon heads back to Stricker's. As he pulls into the driveway, this time he pulls on into the yard and out of the gate so that other people can come and go if needed. Brian meets Joe in the yard, and Joe tells him he wants to sell his old truck and that he already has a lot number for the week. Brian directs Joe where to park his old truck and then looks up Joe's lot number in the auction database, so that he can mark the pickup. Joe then tells Jerry that he'd like to get $500 for his old truck. Jerry scratches his head and tells him he'll do the best he can.

(Monday evening)
The auction goes without a hitch. All of Joe's items sell, even the old pickup.
